City of Las Palmas plans major mobility overhaul around Alfredo Kraus Auditorium with support from the European SPINE Project
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in collaboration with Guaguas Municipales, Sagulpa, and mobility consultants CINESI, has announced a significant reorganization of the area surrounding the iconic Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. Supported by the European SPINE project, that seeks to transform this area into a multimodal hub that integrates public transportation, pedestrian spaces, and new green areas.
The initiative focuses on creating a more efficient and enjoyable experience for pedestrians and public transport users alike. Improvements include optimizing the space for bus stops, creating better transfer points for public transport, and establishing new cycling infrastructure with electric bike stations. The initiative will also introduce a redesigned green space around the auditorium, providing shade, rest areas, and a playground, contributing to a more pleasant urban environment.
Key features of the project include relocating bus zones to ease congestion and making better use of the nearby intermodal parking lot, which will host a new rest area for bus drivers. This reorganization will help reduce traffic in the area while ensuring smoother connections between public transport and cycling routes, particularly for those traveling to the lower part of the city.
This initiative represents a broader effort by the city to integrate sustainable transport solutions, improve urban space, and create a seamless multimodal transportation experience. The transformation around the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium is one of three areas set for redevelopment in SPINE, with similar projects planned for La Ballena and Siete Palmas, making it easier for citizens to move between neighborhoods using public transport, cycling, or walking.
The project highlights the importance of reducing car dependence in urban areas, promoting greener alternatives, and ensuring cities are better prepared for the future of sustainable mobility.
With the backing of the European SPINE project, Las Palmas is positioning itself as a forward-thinking city, contributing to the broader European goal of integrating intelligent mobility solutions and enhancing urban livability.
This new initiative aims not only to improve the local infrastructure but also to set a model for other European cities to follow in their efforts to modernize and enhance mobility systems.
