  • More than 20,000 people have used the public bicycle rental system (BIKI) since it was launched
  • Valladolid is the city with the highest growth in use out of the more than 40 cities in the world that use the same public bicycle service

AUVASA has published on its website the figures for the use of the Valladolid public bicycle rental service, BIKI, for the month of July, showing that the system has broken the record for the number of active users this month, having passed the 10,000 mark, which represents an increase of 28% over the figure obtained during the same period last year.

In addition to the number of people registered as currently active, another remarkable record has been reached as more than 20,000 people have used the service at some point since it was launched. This figure continues to boost the system’s figures and the potential for a progressive growth.

AUVASA is positive about the fact that half of the people who have used the system at some time are active users today, which reflects the good state of BIKI and the need to continue supporting this quality service so as to reach an increasing percentage of the population.

The consolidation of BIKI in Valladolid, the city with the highest growth rate

It should be noted that during the summer months there is usually a drop in the number of uses of public bicycle systems due to the reduction in activity resulting from non-teaching and holiday periods. However, in July, the decrease was very slight. The fact that these two barriers relating to users have been overcome and that there has been an irrelevant drop in use in July highlights the consolidation of BIKI in the city of Valladolid.

In terms of usage, July saw a continued increase in the number of journeys compared to the same period last year. There were 50,050 journeys, which is 13,109 more BIKI journeys than a year ago, representing an increase of 35%.

This increase in trips compared to 2023 has been reproduced throughout this year and has become a constant feature of the service. In this sense, the technological provider of the system has congratulated Valladolid for being the city that is growing the most during 2024 out of the 42 cities in which the service is provided in the world including Mexico City, Quebec City, Buenos Aires, Toronto, Montreal and the Spanish city of San Sebastian.

Improvements to the service with devices to make it easier to anchor bicycles

With the aim of continuing to improve the system, AUVASA has completed the installation of access wedges to the station which make it much easier and more comfortable for riders to anchor their bicycles. This is an aspect that has been appreciated by users who have had the opportunity to try it out.

Finally, AUVASA is also participating, together with the Valladolid City Council, in a European project (SPINE), linked to the Mission Valladolid, climate neutral by 2030, which aims to accelerate progress towards climate neutrality by integrating public transport systems with new mobility services, interchange systems, active transport modes and micro-mobility (https://www.spine-project.eu/).
